Natural singer to voice researcher

As a young person I was what you could call a “natural singer”.  According to my mother I sang before I could speak.  Everything that came out of my mouth had a sing song quality to it.  In fact, I often to this day sing my words more than speak them, much to the entertainment of my friends and students!  Although I did take voice lessons with a wonderful teacher, Priscilla Duff, I really didn’t have a true concept of my own technique.  I simply opened my mouth and sang until one day I got a very bad sinus infection when I was 20.  After that singing and my technique needed to be more intentional.  A couple of years later I was also diagnosed with acid reflux.  I had developed some compensatory gestures and began to notice that singing was just not as easy, I had a slight wobble and lots of tongue tension.  Despite these problems, I did enjoy many good performances and opportunities because I “had a very good sound”.  It is amazing how we “cheat” in our technique when we have a good instrument!  In 2007, I had the pleasure of finishing up my masters in Voice Performance with Dr. Kathleen Wilson.  Through her I learned vocal function exercises, a totally new concept of breath and developed a passion for the fields of Voice Science and Vocal Health.  This led me to Shenandoah University where I am working on my DMA in Voice Pedagogy.  It is at this point in my life that I have the opportunity to do research and attend conferences like the Voice Foundation and Voice Conference.  In this website I will explore different resources for vocal health.Let the healing begin….
